WHAT IS MLD
MLD is a gentle manual treatment technique which improves the activity of the lymph vessels by mild mechanical stretches on the wall of lymph collectors. MLD re-routes the lymph flow around the blocked areas into more centrally located lymph vessels that eventually drain into the venous system. This non-invasive, painless and very effective therapy for lymphedema and other related conditions has been used in Europe successfully for decades and is now becoming widely recognized in the United States
THE HISTROY OF MLD THERAPY
During the early 1930's Dr Emil Vodder created a unique range of movements which brought relief from chronic conditions such as sinus congestion and catarrh.
Since Vodder's pioneering work, Manual Lymphatic Drainage has spread world-wide and has become a popular treatment in many European hospitals and clinics.
MLD is now beginning to gain acceptance in the U.K. as a component in the treatment and control of lymphedema.
Cosmetic surgery
MLD is used as a pre and post treatment to plastic surgery. The pre-operative treatment consists of lymph drainage using draining preparations, to make the tissue as "dry" and to highlight the defect as much as possible.
Post-operative therapy is used for reduction of lymph swelling, reduce scar tissue, and in general for improved and faster healing. Some examples of MLD introduced into cosmetic procedures are attached. These include BLEPHAROPLASTY, RHINOPLASTY, FACE LIFT and ABDOMINOPLASTY.
